Let’s talk about price. It is not recommended to choose a hiking boot solely because it is on sale. Your boots should last a long time and if you are just looking at the price and not their intended function, you may wind up purchasing a boot that will not meet your needs.

Also, remember that you need to take care of your boots. Reiterating, your boots will last you a long time, they are designed to receive a large amount of abuse. So, take care of them. All hiking boots have their particular care program, make sure to read and follow the instructions given by the manufacturer.

Lastly, take the boots on a shorter length hike in order to break them in. Maybe wear them around the house or out for a day of errands. It is not good to get on the trail on a lengthy hike and try to break them in.

How To Find The Best Hiking Boots

There is nothing more enjoyable to get outdoors and go hiking. I like to hike as often as I can so it is important that I have the right hiking boots on my feet so I can go whereever anytime I want without worrying about my feet getting sore. However, there is more to buying hiking boots than going to the store and buying what looks best on the rack.

Regardless of where or how often you plan to go hiking, having the best hiking boots you can find can make a difference in your safety and comfort. When you go to the sports store in search of boots, you will need to have in mind the type of hiking you plan to be doing.

There are different boots made for walking on smooth trails, for climbing mountain trails, and for climbing steep trails over tough terrain. There are also boots that are made especially for summer and those made to keep you feet warmer in winter. Believe me, you don’t want to wear winter hiking boots in the summer and visa versa.

The best hiking boots are built with a sturdy sole, so they won’t fall apart when you hike on uneven paths in the wilderness. A solid bottom can also prevent injury to the feet from any stones or thorns you may accidentally step on while hiking.

They should also have decent cushioning on the insole to reduce the possibility of blisters. The sides should offer sufficient support to help protect your ankles from being twisted to one side on uneven terrain.

Once you have determined the type of hiking you will be doing, consider the best hiking boots for that activity. Trail shoes, usually suggested for walking on smooth trails, are recommended for short hikes or day walks. These are less for protecting the feet and ankles from rocky terrain and more for providing protection to the bottom of the foot.

Heavier Trails Require Sturdier Hiking Boots

For those heading out for three or more days on rugged trails, trail hikers are the best hiking boots for that type. They have the tread on the bottom needed for rocky ground and can provide traction in the mud. Usually waterproof, they will be higher cut on the sides and provide protection from twisting the ankles as well as any branches that be encountered in the wild.

For those looking at the sport of mountain climbing, there are boots designed that may also accommodate attaching crampons for crossing glaciers and steep mountains. These are the best hiking boots for ankle protection in steep trails and also have a stiff sole to provide additional support while climbing steep mountains. While cushioned insoles can help prevent blisters, they may also bunch up under the feet, so insure they are cushioned but secured inside the boot.

Even if you buy the best hiking boots you can find, a proper fit is necessary to prevent foot problems while walking. While they need to be waterproof, they also need to be able to breath to allow them to dry out quickly at the end of the hiking day.

I hope I have helped you understand the importance of finding the best hiking boot for you. Whether you are going into the wilderness for an afternoon hike or to live there for three months in a tent, having the right boots is very important to your comfort and to avoid unnecessary injury. I also hope that you now know that when shopping for outdoor gear it is very important to think of where you are going and how often.

How to Pick the Right Hiking Boots for Varied Activities

Hiking boots are a necessary staple for many different types of outdoor activities, including hiking of course.  These types of boots provide traction, stability and assure the wearer good footing.  If you are shopping for hiking boots for the first time or are searching for new boots to replace your well-used ones, the following tips will come in handy when figuring out how to pick the right hiking boots for different activities.

Figure Out What Your Hiking Boots Will Be Used For

The first step in preparing for your hiking boot shopping trip is to figure out what your hiking boots will be used to accomplish.  In other words, what activity will you be taking part in which makes the inclusion of hiking boots a necessity.  Some individuals just want to use their hiking boots for day hikes whereas others may want to use them for endurance-based hiking trips which would call for a more sturdy and inclusive boot.  When you figure out the main activity you will be using your hiking boots for, you can then move on to the next step which is starting the search for the specific pair of boots.

Single Out Hiking Boots That Contain All the Necessary Features

When reviewing the various hiking boots, whether online or on the shelves, consider which features your hiking boots simply must have.  Some of the desired traits people look for in their hiking boot selection include waterproof qualities, materials, high ankle support, top-notch traction and quick lacing action.  The exact type of hiking boots you choose will depend on what activity you will be primarily using them for.  For example, if you plan on hiking in cold, snowy climates, you will want to choose a hiking boot that is warm, insulated, waterproof and provides good ankle support.  Keeping the features in mind when shopping for hiking boots will help you to pick the right pair.

Keep Cost Factors in Mind

Hiking boots come in many different varieties with various price tags attached as well.  You can spend under 0 for a pair of hiking boots or a couple of hundred dollars on this type of shoe.  If you are shopping on a budget, there are ways to get great deals on your hiking boots without sacrificing for quality.  Look for hiking boots that are on sale and save money while still getting a good hiking shoe.

Look For Quality Brands

Many hiking boot shoppers make the mistake of choosing a hiking boot based on the price alone.  This can lead to trouble as after a few times wearing the hiking boot, one may experience discomfort or pain due to an ill fit.  This is why it is extremely important to read a few reviews and pick a hiking boot that is known for the particular characteristics that you look for in footwear.

More Than One Hiking Boot Purchase May Be Necessary

You should also keep in mind that it may be necessary to purchase more than one type of hiking boot if you plan on taking part in different activities.  Some boots may not be appropriate for all types of activities.  By having more than one pair of hiking boots you can be sure that your outdoor adventure will be carried out properly and that your feet will be comfortable and secure while doing so.  If worried about the cost of purchasing two or more pairs of hiking boots, just keep in mind that this investment will pay off in the end, especially if you consider how many times you will be wearing your hiking boots throughout the year and the longevity of quality hiking boots.

IF i climb a mountain where crampons are need then ski down do i need two pairs of boots, one mountaineering pair, and one skiing pair or do they have boots that work for both.

Looking into starting Ice climbing. I’ve looked at a few different Boot designs, right now I’m really looking at either the Mad Rock “Mountain” or “Alpinist” boots – mostly because of price. I know – in the long run a $400 boot will be worth it, but that’s not in the budget right now – maybe next year. Until then I need an inexpensive boot. How do these models stack up as far as pure Ice Climbing goes? I won’t be doing any serious mountaineering with these boots – I just need something to tide me over. So are they rigid enough? Do they hold up well? Does anyone have these boots and can tell me from personal experience how they perform? I know Mad Rock doesn’t make the best climbing shoes, but they have come a long ways. I just want something rigid and functional for now.

Mountain climbing requires you to have the right equipment for scaling and hiking rough terrain in extreme temperatures. Proper shoes or boots are essential for protecting your feet from the external elements and ensuring traction on the terrain.

There are different types of mountain climbing and the terrain and environment is different for each type. The type of shoe or boot you should wear depends on the type of climbing you will be doing. Traditional high mountain climbing is done in freezing temperatures but the footwear required for ice climbing is different even though both are done in sub zero climates. Rock climbing requires a different type of shoe since you will be scaling walls.

Climbing is not a place to “break in” shoes or decide that you’ll “make do”. Blisters and sores can quickly develop due to the amount of strenuous activity and open wounds can easily get infected. Wearing inappropriate footwear in cold weather can cause frostbite resulting in nerve damage. Shoes and boots are not just for comfort; they are for safety as well.

When choosing boots, lighter is generally better but you have to take into consideration the amount of insulation and the durability. New technology has allowed boots lighter in weight so you can have the best of both worlds. Good hiking boots will usually weigh between three and four pounds.

Various boots are made for cold climbs. You’ll need a boot with inner insulation and probably an outer cover to protect against the snow and ice. Thinsulate and Gore-Tex are both modern materials that help keep in the heat and your feet dry.

On warm trips you’ll need a quality boot that is non-slip and durable. Don’t penny pinch even though you may feel that regular tennis shoes are sufficient. The traction on hiking boots is specially developed for hiking in rough terrain, on slippery rocks and in the rain.

Rock climbing shoes are completely different from the other types of shoes for mountain climbing. Since you are suspended much of the time from ropes it’s important that your feet are as light as possible for mobility reasons. Rock climbing shoes are designed to have a great amount of traction but light weight.

Regardless of the type of shoe, you to need make sure they fit before you buy them. Again, climbing is not a place to “break them in” so don’t settle on something the wrong size because of the price.

For climbers, your feet are very important and therefore it is worth the extra money to buy shoes or boots that are both comfortable and appropriate for the terrain.
