Tips On Climbing Mt. Kenya
Mt. Hiking Tips you Haven’t Heard Before
Do you need these hiking tips? You do if you ever get blisters or twisted ankles or knee pain. In fact, I stopped getting blisters at all over ten years ago. More on that in a moment. First, lets look at some basic preparation and precautions to take when planning a hike.
Hiking Tips – Preparation
If you haven’t done anything physical in a while, you really should try to get in shape before taking a long hike or a backpacking trip. Not only will it make much more enjoyable, but the process of getting ready will point out any problems you might have (sore back, knee problems, blisters, etc.).
Take a hike near home with a fully loaded pack to see how far you can comfortably go. If you are going to be backpacking in running shoes rather than hiking boots, you’ll want to strengthen your ankles. A simple way to do that is to hike on uneven ground. This will flex and exercises your ankles if you do it at least several times in the week or two before your trip.
If you will be traveling in the mountains, try bicycling to get ready. This uses a lot of the same muscles you use when hiking uphill. Of course, regular bicycle rides are also a fast way to boost your aerobic capacity. That can help you walk faster more comfortably.
Buy the right equipment before your hiking or backpacking trip. To be honest, on a short hike you can get by with almost anything. But if you plan to be deep in the wilderness, get some decent clothing for that purpose. Jeans get soaked easily in the rain and stay wet, which is uncomfortable, and can be dangerous if it is cold outside. A nice hat can keep the sun out of your eyes, and a rain jacket can keep you safe and warm.
Carry enough water. If you have any problems with pain when hiking, you should probably carry aspirin or other pain relief, even on short hikes. Map and compass are a good idea of course, and tell someone where you’ll be.
Hiking Tips – Taking Care Of Your Body
I stopped getting blisters the moment I gave up hiking boots and hiking socks. They create a hot, humid environment that is perfect for creating blisters. Even on longer backpacking trips, I use thin nylon socks and lightweight running shoes. You may want to try it. Chances are, you’ll never go back to heavy socks and boots. If you are worried about ankle support, strengthen those ankles! (See above.)
You should also develop a routine for keeping your feet dry and comfortable. Stop occasionally and take off your shoes and socks. Air out your feet for a few minutes. If the socks are wet, replace them and hang the wet ones from your pack to dry. Remove any sand or small sticks and stones from your shoes. If your feet get particularly hot, soak them in a cold stream for a while. Do this, and you’ll get a lot more comfortable miles out of them.
If you get knee pains when hiking, the long term solution may be special exercises to strengthen the surrounding muscles. Short term, you can buy a simple elastic knee brace to see if that helps. You might also want to try arch supports. They cost less than ten dollars and can help stop knee and back problems that are related to over-pronation (flattening of the foot when walking). The combination of these two seems to have cured my knee problems.
What if you are out hiking and get sudden knee pain? Here are a few tips: Icing the knee for a while with cold water from a stream or with snow can help. Resting with the leg elevated usually helps a little as well. Making a walking stick from a branch or small tree and using it especially on downhill stretches can take some of the pressure of the knee.
Still too painful to walk? The inner bark of willows and poplars contains a compound that is similar to aspirin. You can scrape the spongy bark off and make a tea of it, or try just chewing some up. Better yet, just use the hiking tips in part one and be prepared.

Six Tips for a Safe Hiking Adventure
Don’t let a fun hiking trip turn into a disappointment or even a disaster by failing to take some common sense safety steps. Here are six tips to help you plan and enjoy a safe hiking adventure the next time you lace up those boots and trek off into the great outdoors:
1. Pick a specific hiking trail. Choose your hiking trail as far in advance as possible. This will give you time to familiarize yourself with the terrain, the difficulty level of the trip, and to learn about any unique features of the location where you’ll be hiking — especially important if your trip is extensive and involves overnight camping. When selecting your hiking route, be realistic about the time you have for the trip, the distance you can reasonably cover, and the degree of difficulty, i.e., is it a trail for beginners or for more advanced trekkers? Don’t endanger yourself or overdo things physically and destroy the fun of the trip!
2. Learn all you can about the trail and area. For anything more extensive than a walk in a public park, you really need to be sure you get a good map of the trail. (You might even want to use an online tool such as Goggle Maps and print out the details of your hike.) Are there public rest areas? Eating areas? How about the availability of water, or even food? Of course, you’ll need to bring much of this if you’re in any sort of wilderness trail — but make sure you know as much as you can about local resources. Know the trail well enough to know where you are and where you’ll be at all times. That’s an important approach to a good hiking experience.
3. Get emergency contact information, share your contact information. Most national parks and trails are administered locally, i.e., there is some sort of visitor center or trail head center with people supervising it. That means there is contact information you can get, should you have safety or emergency issues and need to get help. Make sure you get that contact information, i.e., a telephone number or other means to get help. Take along a good cell phone. Unless you are well out in wilderness territory or in the mountains, you can probably find usable phone service. Likewise, make sure you leave YOUR contact information with someone at the trail head, and give them contact information for the people you want contacted if an emergency does arise.
4. Bring emergency/first aid kits, extra supplies. Even if you’re hiking adventure is only a few hours and a few miles long, don’t forget to bring an emergency kit/first aid kit. You can find really great, really cheap kits that fit comfortably into a daypack or other bag. Likewise, bring along something nutritious and “portable” to snack on — or perhaps full blown cooking chow if your trip is very long — just to be safe. Think about the news stories you’ve heard in recent years of people starting on a short hike who found themselves lost or stranded without food and water for days. Don’t let something like that ruin your hike. And don’t forget extra water!
5. Dress and equip yourself properly for the trip. You wouldn’t wear slippers or flip-flops for a hike, would you? Hiking boots or sturdy all-terrain running shoes are the obvious choice for a hiking trip. What about a jacket? Perhaps even a solid, warm coat or parka? Proper dress and equipment (walking stick or trekking pole, too, perhaps) are vital to your fun, your comfort, and your safety. Which is why you need to plan ahead of time and scout out the terrain, degree of course difficulty, and the weather forecast for your trip.
6. Make a schedule, share that schedule, stick to the schedule. You needn’t turn your hiking adventure into a lock-step, forced march. By “schedule,” keep it simple — when you’ll get to the trail head, when you’ll actually start, approximately when you expect to be where on the trial, and when you anticipate finishing or returning home. Once you map that out, try to stick to the schedule. Make sure you share that schedule with officials and rangers and along the route. Pet Friendly Tips For Hiking With Your Dog
It’s no secret that exercise is a necessity for both you and your dog. We often forget that our dogs are pack animals and their origins are rooted in hunting, playing, and roaming all day long with their pack family. If you are already in the habit of walking your four-legged friend, you know that it’s a special time for the two of you to bond as well as establish yourself as the leader of your domestic “pack”. Why not shake up your routine a bit and kick your workout into high gear by taking your best friend for a hike?
Follow these 5 tips and your hikes will surely be a wonderful experience that you’ll both enjoy together!
1. Know Your Limits (Yours and Your Dog’s)
Does your current exercise endeavor consist of walking around the block a couple times? Then you may want to rethink that 10 mile hike you’re mapping out. Not only do you need to be able to hike without difficulty, so does your furry companion. Start intensifying your walks by making them longer and include hills if possible so the two of you can build up your stamina. It’s also advisable to take your dog to the vet just to ensure that he will be able to accompany you comfortably when you’re ready to hike. Dogs are people-pleasers and they never want to let on that they are injured or in pain, so they will endure it for as long as they can.
2. Be Prepared
Once you’ve determined that your hike is a “go”, whether it’s a long or a short trip, make sure you have the following items:
- Collar and leash – Bring these just as you would when you’re going for your regular walks.
- Proper ID tags – The tags MUST be legible and specify your dog’s name and your current contact information. It’s also a good idea to have a current photo with you just in case you get separated.
- First Aid Kit – Human first aid kits can come in handy in the event of a cut or scrape (for either of you). Throw some tweezers in it for easy tick removal.
- Vet’s Phone Number – In the event that something unexpected happens, keep your vet’s phone number with you so you can quickly find out how to best take care of your dog. You can never be too careful.
- Sunscreen – You both need sunscreen and they make sunscreen specifically for dogs. Light-colored noses are very susceptible to sunburns and dogs can get skin cancer just like you.
- Orange vests – Know whether or not you are taking your hike during a hunting season. Orange vests for you and your dog will make sure you both stand out.
- Appropriate Dress – When hiking during cooler weather, bring along an extra layer if your dog tolerates “clothes”. For summer hikes, keep a cool, moist scarf or bandana that he can wear to take a bite out of the heat.
3. Bring Water & Food
Just like you need to fuel up and hydrate for a workout, the same holds true for your canine companion. Bring plenty of water and a dish that he can drink from (they make collapsible bowls for traveling ease) and offer it often along the way. A good rule of thumb is to bring 8 ounces of water for every hour you plan to hike (and don’t forget to bring water for yourself!). It’s best to keep him from drinking the water in streams or other natural sources, as these could contain nasty bacteria that will make him sick. Bottles of water that are frozen are also great to pack in case the weather is hot and can offer immediate relief to your pooch.
Food should be given on rest breaks or during bouts of less intense activity to ensure that you don’t upset his tummy or cause bloat.
4. Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Plan your hikes on trails that are used often and provide a clear path; now is not the time to forge a new one through the wilderness. In most cases, you’ll likely encounter the usual suspects of the wildlife world, such as squirrels and maybe a deer or two. Keep your eyes open for common canine offenders, including porcupines and skunks. These animals are not as easily scared off by your dog and may become agitated.
Familiarize yourself with what poison ivy and other unpleasant plants look like. Although your dog can’t get poison ivy, they can pass it on to you, so it’s best to keep them away from anything suspicious.
5. Mind Your Manners
The same rules you follow on your routine walks apply to your hikes. Have a “carry in, carry out” mentality, which includes cleaning up after your dog on the trail. Using a leash will ensure that other hikers, other dogs, as well as the flora and fauna around you will remain undisturbed. If you’re both on a more leisurely hike, let others moving at faster pace pass you easily.

Most fruits and vegetables are high in fiber and low calorie, so they also help clean our colon and make us feel fuller. Canned fruits and vegetables are acceptable; however, there is no substitute for the real thing.
Stay away from junk food and sugar-loaded drinks
Try eliminating junk food and soda from your diet for a week or two, and you will surely feel and see the difference. Maybe the reason why it is called junk food is due to its poor nutritional value. Try looking at a junk food’s label, not only is it full of saturated fat, but also usually high in salt or sugar, or both.
Aside from water, most of the things you drink are also loaded with calories. Soda and sweetened fruit juices are mainly sugar. Thus, no matter how little you eat, but if you still drink lots of soda and sweetened beverages, you will still continue to gain weight.
Don’t skip breakfast
Even if you are in a hurry or late for work or school, you need to grab a bite. It would be better if your breakfast is healthy probably an apple, oatmeal and a glass of nonfat milk.
If you miss breakfast, you most probably will feel hungrier the rest of the day. In order for our body function properly, we need energy from the food we eat. If you skip breakfast, or a meal or two, your body’s metabolism will slow down to compensate for the lack of energy supply.
More often than not, people who skip meals, particularly the first meal of the day, will binge later in the day. So, even if you skipped breakfast, you will have a tendency to eat a lot during lunch or dinner.
Start exercising
Many of us spend an extended number of hours in our offices. We get stuck sitting down in front of the computer for more than eight hours. When we get home, we spend another hour or two to check e-mails and chat with friends. Thus, we don’t expend most of the calories from the food we eat and those excess calories go straight to our belly, arms and thighs.
If you want to increase your metabolism, you must start exercising. Brisk walking is a good way to start your exercise routine. If you do not have time to go to the gym, you need to find ways to increase your activities. Try sports activities that you will enjoy boxing, badminton, or spelunking. Backpacking is a fun and refreshing activity that can be fun for the whole family.You may be near the Mountains or in your back yard! No matter where you are it can be a great experience. You may be a photographer, a nature love, or just trying to get away from busy hectic city life for a while. Backpacking is a hobby (sport) that can be awesome for anyone.
There is no greater place to get connected to earth more than taking an inspiring hike in the hills. My favorite place to hike is the Smoky Mountains.There are places to hike in every state and it is pretty easy to find info on-line these days. Not only is hiking fun and refreshing it is also very good for you. I admit hiking can be very tough on your legs and back and I have almost not made a few of my hikes. So always be prepared and try to get into shape before you take on to big of a trail! Be sure to stretch before you go and take break often.
There are two types of backpacks, external and internal framed. Each pack has its own advantages and disadvantages. The internal frame is great for hiking through heavy vegetation because it is protected from being snagged.
A lot of people think that the external frame sits more comfortable on the back. It honestly really depends on how you built though. One thing that an external frame will do is trap more heat and sweat when your hiking.
The external frames are wider and allow for more space to hold things! They also sit further off the back giving more room for breathing, that’ll keep you cool. I always carry just a regular tech pack and I love the way it sits and feels!
It will soon be the perfect time to get into woods and watch nature bloom once again. Just watch those hungry waking beers! So grab you a new pack and reserve a cabin before they get sold out and head to the woods!.
Here are some are some great Hiking tips for you!
1. Try not to carry very much weight. Not only will it Hurt you and wear you out, it is dangerous. Try to find clothes that are light and will dry fast also! Try to stay away from cottons and try to wear Poly-prop or something like it.It is super light and dries out very quick. The best thing to do is go buy the lightest gear that you can get. When you are hiking always put the heavier weight up toward the top so that it balances out more! Be sure to carry enough to stay warm. I always carry a cotton top that doubles as a my pillow!
2. Carry a little med kit with you and be sure to carry a lightweight knife also. A multi-tool knife is the ticket. Also carry some fishing string and a hook if you are on a deep mountain hike. Nothing like fresh mountain fish over the fire.
3. Carry your water in the lightest thing you can. I prefer bottled water and there are a few companies making very light bottles for conserving the environment. You need to also carry a good amount of dried food. I like to go to Wally World and get the dried Fruit packs. They are full of Energy and don’t weigh very much.
4. Keeping you gear dry can be tough to do if you are on a long hike. I have heard of a few things that can be done to help keep the wet out. I have heard of lining the pack with plastic. It works ok but not the best solution. I knew this one guy that used Wax. He melted it all over his pack and said it worked great! I guess if you have an old pack or you think the purpose is more important than looks. They also sell some different kind of sealants that work great!
5. For cooking there are some great products out now that get the job done fast and easy! It is always safer not to build a fire if you don’t have to. But if you do here are a few tips. Bring Matches as well a lighter. You should not have a problem finding dry wood and leaves if you look in the right places. Try to find a cave or overhang if thing are wet. It really is hard to get wet wood going. What I always do is build a little pyramid around the fire with the wet wood; the heat dries it out over time. Remember to put out your fire completely before you leave you site! If you can’t find water rake a lot of dirt and cover it as well as you can.
6. Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather. When it is very cold out it is essential to wear headgear. It will save you life! Most body heat is lost through the head, so keep it warm.
7. Be sure to wear some ankle supporting boots! Finding the right boot can be tricky. You want to make sure your foot fits nice and snug and not have too much room to play. I bought some waterproof boots awhile back and discovered that they were waterproof both ways. They didn’t breath at all, but they do keep the water out! So there is a fine balance in finding the right boot.
8. Always carry a map and compass they can save you life! A GPS device is great to carry and a cell phone as well. They make some great waterproof cases at Wally world very cheap. Be sure to study the area that you are going so you know what you are expecting. I have been hiking in the Smoky Mountains and was overwhelmed by how many miles of trees there were and how they all looked the same.
9. Always hike with someone else! Never hike alone and if you do let someone know where you’re hiking and when you’re coming back!
10. Carry some Parachute Cord! It can used for a few different things! Use it to dry your clothes or make a shelter with it!
11. Change you batteries in your flashlight! Go with the Lithium AA batteries! They weigh half as much than an alkaline and last about three times longer!
12. Instead of carrying any kind of Soda or sugar drinks switch over to some kind of pack that you mix with water! There are all kinds of great natural alternatives out there!
13. Get lost in the woods? Know where you are going before you get there! If dark fall on you it is best to find a cave or natural shelter build a fire and plan to camp! Wondering in the woods at night isn’t suggested! You may fall in a cave or off a cliff. Just wait to daybreak unless you got a full moon with plenty of light. Pretend to be an Indian! You are not lost it is the teepee that is lost. The next day if you can’t figure where you are at, try to find higher ground and see if you can a visual of the area! If you are very lost and have no idea where you went wrong? Find a creek and hike beside the creek going downhill. The odds of seeing people will greatly be increased! Plus you are near a food and water source! Keep that fire burning and stay dry! You may also try the a SOS signal with your fire! Smoke has save many lives!
